Magazines in the library

The library has the following magazines available for this assignment:

  • The Atlantic
  • Harper's
  • The New Yorker
  • Rolling Stone

Links to their website are available in the box to the right.

Finding Opinion Articles

  • The Atlantic
Founded in 1857, this monthly magazine has a wide range of content, including "literary and cultural content;" not all articles will work. Check with Ms. Jankowski if you are not sure!
  • Harper's
A monthly magazine of "literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts" founded in 1850, making it the "second oldest continuously published magazine in the United States." Not all articles here will work for this assignment, preview to ensure the article you are choosing has a viewpoint and is not just reporting facts.
  • The New Yorker
Founded in 1925, this weekly magazine presents "reportage, commentary, and criticism" among other content.
  • Rolling Stone
Jann Wenner began publishing this bi-weekly magazine in 1967, focusing on popular culture and political reporting. The link here is for Politics section. See separate link for Matti Taibbi.
  • Matt Taibbi - Rolling Stone online only political content
One of the major political reporters for RS, whose content is now primarily only available online.
  • Al Jazeera
    The Arab world's English site.
  • Boston Globe Columnists and Critics
Some of this content is available to subscribers only. If your parents subscribe (to either print or online), you should be able to access - ask them if they have activated their online access.
  • Chicago Tribune
Opinion section from the Midwest's leading newspaper.
  • The Guardian (UK)
British newspaper's opinion section. See columnists (scroll down) as well.
  • International New York Times
Fomerly called the International Herald Tribune. International opinion - spotlight on world issues.
  • Los Angeles Times Columnists
You can access 10 articles per month free of charge. But each article you click on counts as one of the articles, so be judicious!
  • The Nation
    National Magazine's opinion writers.
  • National Public Radio
    The Opinion Page.
  • The New Republic
"The Plank" - The New Republic's opinion section.
  • The New York Times Opinion Pages
Columnists, contributing writers, and op-ed (opnion-editorials) may all be good sources of articles to read.
  • The Wall Street Journal
Use the Commentary and Columns sections of this page to find appropriate articles.
  • The Washington Post
Featured Columns (and Opinion Blogs, if allowed by Ms. McGuire) could work for this assignment.
